BIO
SECURITY

The importance of Bio-Security and how to implement it

The recurrence of  diseases and viruses outbreaks in poultry houses and other animal growing farms during the past few years (such as the avian influenza outbreak of 2015) has emphasized the importance of a strong Biosecurity protocol.

In order to protect the animals from exposure to pathogenic micro-organisms, which may cause diseases, animal production farms must act according to a well composed Bio-Security protocol and implement disinfectants, insecticides and cleaning

Dor.ky Bio-Security protocol for Poultry farms

Maintaining a professional and extensive Bio-Security protocol assists in the reduction of pathogenic micro-organisms presence in the farm, and the exposure of the animals to diseases that may cause harm to the animal health, well-being and thus, productivity.

Any negative effect on the animal health and well-being, may have ramification on the animals performance, production and morbidity.

Multi source pathogenes route

Most common ways pathogenic micro-organisms arrive to the farm animal:

1.       Trucks, vehicles and visitors.

2.       Equipment and cloths

3.       New chickens arrival to the farm

4.       Animal feed and water

5.       Rodents

6.    Birds

Humans, rodents, birds and insects may carry pathogenic micro-organisms.

Upholding Bio-Security protocol will minimize the transfer possibility of pathogenic micro-organisms from carriers to the animals.

pathogenic micro-organisms presence in the animal production farm may cause harm to the
animal health and well-being.

Any negative effect on the animal health and well-being, may have ramification on the animals performance, production and morbidity.

Therefore, in past years there has been an increase in the awareness towards the importance of maintaining a Bio-Security protocol in animal production farms.

Bio-Security guidelines are based on establishing “barriers” to minimize and prevent any contact between the animals and pathogenic micro-organisms / their carriers:

Physical barrier:

·         Fencing the farm premises to prevent unsupervised entry to the farm.

·         Keeping the animal surroundings closed and sterile as possible in order to prevent contact between the animal and the pathogenic micro-organisms carriers/transporters.

·         Prevention of unnecessary entry of visitors, vehicles and animal.

Chemical barrier:

Which operates to eradicate the pathogenic micro-organisms, and their insect or rodent carriers/transporters

·         Insecticide – controlling the amount of insects and rodents in the farm and animal surroundings. Thus significantly minimizing the contact between the animals and the pathogens carrying insects/rodents which may be transferred to the animals.

·         Disinfectant – establishing several disinfectant barriers (vehicle tunnel, tire dips, boot dips) to kill the pathogens in the animals surrounding and in the entry to the farm. Another important disinfectant activity is disinfecting the animals close environment and the equipment which they come into contact with.

Human barrier:

Proper conduct of the growers and farm workers, while strictly upholding the Bio-Security guidelines. Not allowing unnecessary entries to the farms, keeping animals food and equipment sterile, maintaining Dor.Ky Bio-Security protocol according to the recommended instructions.
